As the North Carolina Department of Transportation continues its work to widen an 11.4-mile stretch of Interstate 40 in Orange County, two lanes of I-40 East/Interstate 85 North are set to close Thursday and Friday nights.
A release from NCDOT said near the split of the two interstates west of Hillsborough, one lane will be closed each night for construction preparations to create a third lane — which, in time, is meant to improve safety and congestion along the busy corridor.
According to the state department, the right lane of I-85 North/I-40 East will close from 9 p.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Friday. A second lane on the right side will close around midnight on Friday through 7 a.m. on Saturday. NCDOT said this plan will ensure that at least one lane for the exit to I-40 East will remain open to motorists the entire night.
The lane closures are separate from the full closure at the I-40 East/I-85 North split planned by the state Department of Transportation in April, which was also part of the I-40 Widening Project. That portion of the project was postponed due to inclement weather and NCDOT has not yet rescheduled the closure.
During the lane closures Thursday, Friday and Saturday, drivers in Orange County are encouraged to “remain cautious and alert throughout the work zone” by the Department of Transportation.
