The state Department of Transportation shared two projects that will require full road closures in Orange County in the coming days.
NCDOT will conduct overnight closures on Interstate 40 West outside Hillsborough starting on Sunday, as bridge replacement over Old N.C. 86 begins. An alert from the department said the interstate will close both lanes near mile marker 261 for several nights from 12 a.m. through 5 a.m. until the demolition is finished — which is projected to be March 16. It’s the latest step in long-term construction that’s happened near the exchange in Orange County.
Traffic will be detoured down the exit ramp, across Old N.C. 86 and back up the I-40 west-bound onramp during the closures. Meanwhile, Old N.C. 86 will be closed underneath the bridge, with a detour route in place from 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. while demolition is underway. Traffic traveling south will be detoured down Waterstone Drive to N.C. 86., while northbound traffic will be detoured to I-40 East via New Hope Church Road.
A couple days later, a road in northern Chapel Hill will also experience closures. NCDOT crews will close Whitfield Road, which is just north of I-40, to install a new pipe beginning on Tuesday, March 14. The full closure is expected to begin at 10 a.m. and will last through Friday, March 24.
The state department says a signed detour will be shared for motorists, which sends people down Highway 86, Weaver Dairy Road and Sunrise Road.
NCDOT encouraged Orange County residents and visiting motorists to remain “cautious and alert” when approaching the respective work zones and to factor detours into their trips.
