The work to install infrastructure for Google Fiber, advertised as an ultra high-speed internet service, has largely finished in Carrboro. Now, more work is scheduled to prepare parts of Chapel Hill for the service.
After working on Google Fiber infrastructure along Church Street in August, the Town of Chapel Hill is expecting much more construction in the coming weeks downtown. The local government shared an alert last week saying several streets will see contractors boring, coring and digging open trenches on roads starting on Monday.
The streets expected to be worked on include West Franklin Street, West Rosemary Street, North and South Graham Street, South Roberson Street, Kenan Street, Ransom Street and Cameron Avenue.

According to the Town of Chapel Hill, Google Fiber contractors are expected to work on one segment and road at a time, with each taking a day or two to complete. During the project, drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians should expect to travel around the work zones. While the roads will not be completely closed, the local government said commuters can plan to see traffic shifts, flaggers and pedestrian detours.
Contractors are expected to be on site from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, beginning with Monday, November 29. The project is expected to take four weeks in total to complete.
Google Fiber began construction in Carrboro in December 2019, taking pauses during 2020 due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and instances where gas lines were struck. The installation of infrastructure wrapped up in the fall of 2020, with the service now officially available to several areas around the town.
