UPDATE: This article has been updated to reflect information from the Town of Carrboro on Wednesday.

The intersection of Estes Drive and North Greensboro Street in Carrboro is closed Wednesday morning after an accident involving a power line derailed construction on Tuesday.

A message from the Town of Carrboro altered the community of the issue at the popular intersection on Tuesday, encouraging motorists to find an alternate route while power is restored. Wednesday morning, the town shared another message saying crews are continuing to restore the area following downed power lines.

As of 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Duke Energy’s Outage Map listed nearly 2,000 customers without power, ranging along Greensboro Street down to Highway 54. An hour later, the utility company estimated more than 600 customers north of the Greensboro-Estes intersection were still without power and could be until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

By Wednesday morning, Duke Energy reported all power being restored to customers in the community.

In August, Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle spoke to 97.9 The Hill about some problems the project is causing for nearby residents. Residents have sent traffic complaints to the town government, while others have contacted them and the state Department of Transportation about noise disruptions coming from the project.

“I know it’s still a big disturbance to the folks who live around there,” Lavelle said, “especially now when kids are trying to learn [with school restarting.]”

Lavelle said the Town of Carrboro knew such an expansive project at a well-traveled intersection would cause challenges no matter the circumstances. Construction at the Estes Drive and North Greensboro intersection has been nearly constant since last August. In addition to building a traffic roundabout, replacement of a stormwater channel under the street is also being conducted and creating noise.
