Hillsborough motorists will notice lane closures throughout the weekend, as an existing bridge in the area will be demolished.

According to a release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, state contracts will shift traffic on U.S. 70 to a temporary bridge over the Eno River on the east side of Hillsborough. By doing so, crews can replace the existing 79-year-old bridge.

The department said contracts will begin closing certain lanes at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with work expected to be complete by the end of the day.

Lane closures on the opposite side of the bridge will be closed too, with Thursday’s release saying motorists will be blocked from using the U.S. 70 entrance to Riverside Drive closest to the Eno River. Drivers will be directed to use the second entrance and Mountain View Court to access stretches on Riverside Drive instead.

According to NCDOT, the demolition will be postponed to another weekend if weather interferes with the project.

Drivers are advised to slow down when approaching the work zone, said the department, and be mindful of the crews working close to the travel lanes. Updates on travel information and closures can be found on the NCDOT website.
