N.C. Department of Transportation crews will begin work on replacing the Old Greensboro Road bridge that crosses Phils Creek between Jones Ferry and Neville Road on Monday, April 9.
According to a release, part of the road will close 7 am on Monday until the work is completed in November, weather permitting.
Commuters who use the bridge will be able to detour around the closure using Neville Road, N.C. 54 and Hatch Road.
The bridge, built in 1978, no longer meets the needs of modern day traffic.
“The work includes elevating the bridge by two feet and adding new bicycle lanes in each direction,” said Division 7 Board Member and Chairman for the NCDOT, Michael Fox in a previous release. “This will increase safety by improving sight-distance as well as improve connectivity for drivers and bicycle riders in this community.”
The NCDOT Board was awarded $984,000 for the project which is part of the department’s bridge program to improve the overall condition of the state’s bridges and ensure safety of drivers.
“Cycling is extremely popular in this area, both for transportation and for recreation,” said North Carolina Bicycle Club president David Cole. “We are delighted that NCDOT recognizes the importance of prioritizing the safety of travelers using multiple modes of transportation.”
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
