Road conditions quickly deteriorated Wednesday morning with the inclement weather from the latest winter storm to hit central North Carolina.

Crews had been working since Monday to prepare roadways ahead of the inclement weather, but temperatures were a couple of degrees warmer than anticipated to start the day. That caused the first precipitation to fall as rain, which washed away some of the brine that had been spread in the lead up to the storm.

Orange County Emergency Services officials reported that crews had responded to 28 accidents just before noon on Wednesday. Chapel Hill authorities responded to 16 weather-related crashes, as of 4:45 p.m. Officials said there were no injuries reported.

Fordham Boulevard was closed for approximately an hour due to a crash near Manning Drive, according to officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The road opened before 3 p.m.

Chapel Hill Fire crews were also on the scene of a structure fire on Columbia Street Wednesday.
