The latest batch of overnight closures for Interstate 40 and Old N.C. 86 in Orange County are set to happen this week, according to an alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
A release from NCDOT on Thursday said the two roads in Hillsborough will experience overnight closures from Monday, Nov. 18 through Wednesday, Nov. 20 as crews continue bridge work on the interstate. As a result, road-users are encouraged to anticipate delays and detours in the area from 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. on the three nights.
The detour for those driving on I-40 West will be to take Exit 261 for Hillsborough, cross Old N.C. 86, and then re-enter the interstate through the on-ramp. NCDOT did not say traffic traveling eastbound on I-40 would be affected.
Meanwhile, those driving on Old N.C. 86 will be directed to detour by using Waterstone Drive, N.C. 86, and New Hope Church Road to bypass the construction closure.
NCDOT said if all its work goes to plan, the closures will end at 5 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 for I-40, while Old N.C. 86 will close an additional night from 10 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Friday for construction. For real-time information while navigating the closures, the state department recommends following NCDOT on social media or using DriveNC.gov.
The work is part of the ongoing I-40 Widening Project, which will eventually bring an additional lane to each side of the interstate through Orange County’s 11.4 miles of the road. To learn more about the project and see the latest public updates, visit the NCDOT website.
