The new town and county facility at 203 South Greensboro Street in Carrboro continues to rise out of the ground and see its construction progress. But this week, work under the ground is going to cause a road closure.
The Town of Carrboro issued a release on Monday alerting community members that, starting on Wednesday, East Braxton Foushee Street bordering the project site will close during business hours for an estimated three days. The stretch between South Greensboro Street and Maple Avenue Extension will be closed and manned with flaggers from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. According to the town, the road work is to allow the Orange Water and Sewer Authority to make a utility connection to the building.
Carrboro said flaggers will be coordinating traffic flow during East Braxton Foushee Street’s closure at Maple Avenue Extension to allow alternating one-way traffic around the area. The road will reopen to allow normal traffic flow during the evenings.

The local government warned that this may not be the only closure along the street in June. Dominion Energy will also be completing utility work later this month — although the town did not specify whether it is for the 203 South Greensboro Project. Monday’s alert said updates on that future closure of East Braxton Foushee Street will be provided at a later date.
The facility, which will chiefly be home to the southern branch of the Orange County Public Library, broke ground in 2022 and is anticipated to be finished in the late summer to early fall. Beyond the library — which is currently being staffed and stocked — the $42 million building will hold space for Carrboro Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources programs and office space, the Orange County Skills Development Center, WCOM radio, and parking deck.
Additionally, the Town of Carrboro and Orange County governments recently issued a call for community members to weigh in on what to name the facility. Surveys for public input will be open through June 14 and name options are subject to the county’s Property Naming Policy.
