An intersection in the rural parts of Chapel Hill and Orange County is set to receive an all-way stop in the coming days, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
A release from the state department on Friday said transportation crews will be making a traffic change to the intersection of Dairyland Road and Dodson’s Crossroads in the western part of the county. The intersection presently has stop signs for traffic traveling on Dodson’s Crossroads, but not Dairyland Road.
NCDOT said the change was determined as a result of a recent “engineering study on roadway crashes and incidents” at the intersection. According to the department’s 2010 study across North Carolina, data shows that intersections converted into all-way stops see a 77 percent reduction in fatalities and injuries from crashes. The safety method is also more cost-effective for the department and is more predictable for road-users than stoplights are at intersections, says the department’s website.
Work on the Dairyland Road and Dodson’s Crossroads intersection is set to begin around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20, according to Friday’s release. NCDOT said, weather permitting, the crews should last a few hours and will be finished by early Tuesday afternoon. While crews are on-site, the state department urged drivers to slow down and use caution.
North Carolina laws requires drivers to bring their vehicles to a full stop at a stop sign, with each respective road user proceeding through the intersection in the order in which they arrived. More laws and safety tips are explained here:
