The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a vehicle crash Monday night where a pedestrian was struck and injured.

A release from police said Chapel Hill officers responded to a reported vehicle and pedestrian collision in the 1100 block of North Carolina Highway 54. The crash happened in the eastbound lanes, which are close to the Kingswood Apartments community.

According to police, the pedestrian was transported to UNC Hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries. An update from Chapel Hill Police on Tuesday said the person was stable, but sustained “serious injuries.” The driver remained at the scene of the crash, and a spokesperson for the police department said, as of Tuesday, there are “no charges at this point” from the crash.

According to the police department’s data, Monday’s incident marks 19 pedestrian-involved collisions reported in Chapel Hill in 2023. That total surpasses the amount of reported pedestrian crashes in 2022, which the Chapel Hill Vision Zero Dashboard lists as 18.

While traffic was slowed by a lane closure along N.C. Highway 54 as emergency services responded to Monday’s crash, a Chapel Hill Police Department spokesperson said the road was reopened around 6:15 p.m.

No additional information is available as of Tuesday, according to Chapel Hill Police.
