Traffic on I-40 in Durham was severely impacted Friday afternoon as a result of an accident at Miami Blvd.
A crash blocked all lanes of I-40 westbound at Miami Blvd (MM 281). Traffic was able to get by the scene in the median. As a result of this incident, traffic backed up for at least five miles. Gradually, crews began to reopen lanes of travel which slowly eases the gridlock.
The left lane of eastbound I-40 was also blocked at Miami Blvd as a result of this accident. Eastbound motorists also saw several miles of slow moving traffic.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area. Westbound motorists heading from Raleigh were advised to consider I-540 to Hwy 70 to I-85 South as a detour.
The traffic trouble is exacerbated by the holiday weekend. AAA Carolinas projects that nearly 1.2 million North Carolinians will travel this weekend hitting a record high for Fourth of July travel.
