Two separate road projects in Chapel Hill, each described as “significant” by the town government, are set to begin on August 21.
The shorter of the two projects is part of the wide-ranging Estes Drive Connectivity Project and is set to last three months. It will begin with work on sidewalks between the YMCA and Shadowood Apartments driveways on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Contractors will close the northbound outside travel lane of MLK, which will be converted to a protected walkway to ensure pedestrians can safely navigate around the sidewalk closure.
The Chapel Hill Transit bus stop serving the YMCA will move south toward the Airport Road crosswalk.
The longer project will see East Rosemary Street closing to thru traffic for approximately six months. The street will close between the entrance to the Rosemary/Columbia lot and the entrance to the Wallace Parking Deck. Both the lot and the deck will remain open; the lot can be accessed from Columbia Street, and the deck will be accessible from Henderson Street.
Despite the street closing to motorists, a sidewalk along the work area will remain open to pedestrians, though foot traffic may briefly be paused to move equipment. There will also be a marked pedestrian detour around the project.
The closure will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
East Rosemary previously closed for several weeks to remove a pedestrian bridge over the street in the summer of 2021. Both that project and the upcoming one are part of overarching construction work at Rosemary Street to redevelop the area. Planned structures include a parking deck and an office space.
