The Town of Chapel Hill provided a pair of alerts for motorists and pedestrians visiting the downtown area: one involving transit-related purchases, and another involving sidewalk access.

The local government said that a pedestrian detour at 136 East Rosemary Street began Thursday, May 18, and will run through the end of June. A contractor is performing work on the sidewalk at the address which will require a closure. Barricades and detour signs are in place to help pedestrians navigate the change, and motorists should be alert to increased pedestrians in the East Rosemary Street area.

The 136 East Rosemary site is in the middle of the ongoing redevelopment efforts along the downtown Chapel Hill street. The town urged drivers and those using the road to be more cautious of pedestrian crossings because of the closure.

Additionally, Chapel Hill said the town’s parking ticket payment and Transit Park & Ride permit purchases portal will be down for a system-wide upgrade from 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 through the following Friday, May 26. During this time, the town asks residents to hold off on transactions — as there will be no way to pay a ticket or purchase a permit. The only way to appeal a ticket is to email the Town of Chapel Hill and follow the contest citation directions on the back of the ticket. The town will provide an update online and on social media once the system is operational, according to Wednesday’s alert.

For more information, visit the town’s website dedicated to downtown parking.

South of downtown, there will also be a traffic closure on UNC campus. William Blythe Drive will be closed from Monday, May 22 through May 26, according to an alert by the university.

The purpose of the closure is to install a tower crane at the Steven D. Bell Hall project site, which is an expansion of the Kenan-Flagler Business School. During the closure, UNC said traffic will be detoured along Manning Drive.
