Two men are in the hospital after a high-speed police chase in Orange County ended with a serious crash in the early morning hours on Thursday.
Officials with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety say a State Highway Patrol member was monitoring traffic on westbound I-40 at 2:49 a.m. when a vehicle sped by at 133 mph, more than twice the speed limit. With the officer in pursuit, the vehicle exited onto NC-86 and turned south toward Chapel Hill. At Piney Mountain Road, the driver attempted to turn left but lost control and struck a tree.

Emergency crews extracted the driver, 31-year-old Juan Aquino, and a passenger, 35-year-old Nafees Bilal. Both have been hospitalized with serious injuries. No law enforcement agents were injured.
“The crash remains under investigation,” said a spokesperson for NCDPS. “Charges will be forthcoming once the investigation concludes.”
