UPDATE: The Town of Hillsborough lifted the boil water advisory for affected residents on Thursday evening.
After a water main leak led to shutoffs for most of Wednesday, some Hillsborough residents are under a boil water advisory.
The Town of Hillsborough shared a release Wednesday night saying repairs on a 12-inch water main along U.S. Highway 70-A, just west of N.C. 86 are complete. While water has been restored, residents and businesses along the highway between Tuscarora Drive and Morelanda Drive are under a boil water advisory until test results indicate the water is safe to drink.
In addition to homes along Tuscarora and Morelanda Drives, residents on Claytor Drive and Saponi Drive are also under the advisory.
Boil water advisories are often issued following leaks to test whether contaminants entered the system during repair processes. Until test results are returned, the Town of Hillsborough said affected customers should consider their water unsafe to drink and should boil tap water before consuming.
Bacteriological testing of water in the area has been conducted because contaminants could have been introduced into the system during the repair work. Testing takes about 24 hours to return results. During the time between restoration of water service and the return of safe test results, affected customers should assume the water is unsafe to drink and take appropriate precautions, such as boiling tap water before consuming it.

The Town of Hillsborough said in its message Wednesday evening test results on the water are expected to be shared late on Thursday.
A release from the town government at 9 a.m. said an emergency repair was being completed, with the water main being completely turned off while crews made repairs. Residents and businesses along U.S. 70-A, as well as N.C. 86, Valley Forge Road and Cornerstone Court, experienced the water shutoffs. In addition, motorists experienced some delays through Wednesday, as the eastbound lane of U.S. 70-A was closed for the duration of the work.
