A stretch of a well-traveled road in Chapel Hill is closed for the next week to complete water line repairs, according to Chapel Hill’s local government.

Part of Old Durham Road, running from Scarlett Road to the new roundabout near the Wegmans supermarket, closed on Monday and is expected to remain closed to traffic until the end of the month.

According to a release from the Town of Chapel Hill, the closure is by the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a contractor performs work on an older water line under the road. The town government said the closure could last through Tuesday, June 1, depending on the weather.

Located off of U.S. 15-501 and used as a connection to residential streets near the Orange and Durham County line, the closed stretch of Old Durham Road has experienced more vehicle traffic since the Wegmans opened its doors to the community in February. The Town of Chapel Hill and the state Department of Transportation, however, took steps like installing the roundabout and traffic calming measures in an effort to limit the impact of traffic on the nearby residential area.

The town government said detour signs will be in place for motorists to navigate the closure until work on the water lines is complete.
