A project is being proposed that could widen South Churton Street in Hillsborough.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be hosting a drop-in meeting to provide information and gather feedback on plans to widen the roadway from I-40 to Orange Grove Road.
“It’s pretty obvious that going north – once you start hitting the railroad bridge and the river bridge and going through the historic district – there’s not room to widen without completely erasing the character of the town,” Stevens said. “Which is one reason why in our strategic plan we also wanted to place and encourage development south of the river.”
The mayor said this road widening could help serve that future development. But there are still unanswered questions.
“How can we keep that traffic moving but still enhance the intersections for pedestrians where they need to cross the street,” Stevens said. “It’s already difficult but where can we do it.”
This is also one piece of what Stevens described as a much larger comprehensive vision for transportation around Hillsborough, including the planned train station.
“This Orange Grove Road extension and the Churton Street extension, all of those are just part of the larger comprehensive plan about how it is that we can do our best to deal with the increasing population of town and the transportation needs and how do we enhance connectivity,” Stevens said, “including bike lanes and pedestrian lanes as well as vehicle traffic.”
Staff from DOT and the town will be on hand to answer questions and take feedback from the public Tuesday afternoon. There will not be a formal presentation. The public is invited to drop in from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillsborough Town Hall Annex Board meeting room on Corbin Street.
