Some roadways in Chatham and Durham counties are reopening following washouts earlier this week due to heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Florence. The heavy rains early Monday morning caused widespread flooding issues and caused many roads to be closed.
Crews have been working to reopen those roadways and assessing some more long-term project.
Whitfield Road in Orange County remains closed as it is approaching NC 86 just north of Chapel Hill. The North Carolina Department of Transportation website said the section of roadway could be closed until October 8. A section of US 501 near the Chatham – Lee county line also remains closed at the Deep River bridge due to flooding, according to the DOT.
But progress has been made on some other major roads closed due to the storm.
Crews have been able to finish repairs of storm damage on Old Chapel Hill Road between Garret Road and Southwest Durham Drive, DOT officials said, and the roadway is now open. And a section of US 421 near the Lee – Chatham county line has reopened after being closed because of flooding. Jones Ferry Road southwest of Carrboro near Damascus Church Road remains closed and the DOT website estimates it could be late November before it is reopened.
