Summer Brings Road Construction Projects in Chapel Hill

Summers in Chapel Hill mean less student traffic, and that gives the Town of Chapel Hill an opportunity to catch up on construction projects.

The town adopted its nearly $111 million budget last month, which will allocate funds for several resurfacing projects, most of which are happening in more residential areas.

Town of Chapel Hill communications specialist Ran Northam said that of these projects, the Weaver Dairy Road Extension could be the most impactful.

“Weaver Dairy Road extension is one of the bigger [projects] that the town is undertaking this year, and that will include the installation of buffered bike lanes, which is really a great thing on that stretch of road,” said Northam.

Northam said that the town is focusing on communicating with utilities, PSNC energy and the community to limit the inconvenience these projects could cause.

“If an emergency were to happen, we’re still going to be able to get an ambulance to your home in the same amount of time that we would if the road was open and there was nothing going on,” said Northam. “And if there is noise, we’re going to limit it as much as possible, but it’s also only going to be one night.”

The town is hoping to have all construction completed by the beginning of the fall semester.
