****UPDATE: One lane of northbound traffic was opened just before three o’clock Friday afternoon.****
A wreck has closed all lanes of I-85 northbound at one o’clock Friday afternoon.
North Carolina Department of Transportation officials posted on Twitter that the road was closed due to a wreck near Mile Marker 168. The thoroughfare is closed between NC 86 and US 70.
The impact on traffic was immediate in creating major backups. Officials then said that the wreck involved a tanker truck. DOT crews are on the scene and firefighters are working the crash area, according to a release.
WRAL and ABC11 are reporting the truck driver was killed in the wreck.
The DOT said that crews will have to inspect the roadway for safety once the crash is clear before it can be reopened. After initially estimated four o’clock for the thoroughfare to reopen, the DOT website has revised that estimate to seven o’clock Friday night.
Additional details will be added to this post as they are made available.
